Are You Unhappy? Are You Sure? Use This Checklist to Find Out

You don’t have to get divorced, go bankrupt, or land in jail to have your life disrupted. The negative impact of unhappiness for you could be subtle—so subtle, in fact, that you might not even recognize it.

The following list identifies many subtle negative effects that can be a direct result of your unhappiness.

Many of them might appear to be normal everyday events. Which of them do you identify with? Do you:

  • l have difficulty getting out of bed in the morning?
  • l dread the day ahead?
  • l feel relief when the day is over?
  • l feel depressed and/or anxious on Sunday night because you dread going to a job you dislike on Monday morning?
  • l feel like you’re not quite as good as someone else? (you know who that is)
  • l pretend to be someone you’re not?
  • l compare yourself to others?
  • l feel like “they” have all the good looks, popularity, fun, success, or even luck?
  • l want to trade places with someone who has “more of something” than you do?
  • l choose the wrong relationship partner over and over?
  • l have a series of failed relationships?
  • l want out of the relationship you’re in, but stay in it anyway?
  • l play too many video games?
  • l live your own life vicariously as a Facebook junkie?
  • l feel lonely?
  • l feel bored?
  • l feel weird?
  • l feel depressed?
  • l feel angry?
  • l feel anxious or stressed much of the time?
  • l have difficulty relaxing after a stressful day?
  • l allow what someone else thinks to spoil things for you?
  • l make yourself sick with worry?
  • l have emotional pain you want to be rid of?
  • l feel like your life didn’t turn out the way it was supposed to by now?
  • l wait for the “other shoe” to drop whenever something good happens?
  • l deal with crisis after crisis?

Which of the above do you identify with? Print out this list and note how each one of the negative effects usually leads to more unhappiness. Unhappiness can be costly to your emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
