Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a real live television news program?
Let me take you on a tour behind the scenes of a live TV Station with Celebrity Image Expert, Starley Murray.
While preparing for our debut, Starley starts with “early is on time.” For someone who often runs late, I knew I had better make sure I was not only on time, but early! And early it was. I was actually running late because I didn’t have time to put my makeup on and it turned out that it was a good thing. So with no makeup on and with makeup bag in hand, I was picked up at 6:15 am for an early arrival at the station by Starley’s assistant.
It’s still dark when we arrive. We ring a bell at the back door…..no answer! Oh no, now what? Ring it again! And again! Finally a cameraman who is walking down a hallway sees us through the small elongated window in the door. YAY! He opens the door for us and we step into the amazing world of television.
Down a long hallway, through some doors and the first stop is makeup. And guess what? I am the celebrity! This is fun. One of Starley’s angels does my makeup and hair prior to going onto the set! Then we make our way into the inner sanctum, the set. Shoosh. Be quiet. Walk softly.
And then, something unspeakable has happened. Someone spilled coffee on the morning show co anchor, Jared Silverman’s necktie just as he is ready to go live. But like the seasoned pro that he is, he isn’t rattled in the least bit. He magically finds another tie, all is well, and the show goes on.
It is obvious that everyone here lives and breathes television…..and getting it right the first time. The goal is to discover and professionally present the next piece of news to an unseen waiting audience.
While the show goes on, we are setting up a table to display several new book releases. A mock-up of my Good With Me cover is among them. The producer of the show comes into the inner sanctum. She is relaxed and very friendly. She interacts with Starley and is congratulated for being up for an Emmy later that day at the Lone Star News Emmy Awards. She accepts the compliment and heads back to the control room where she makes producing award-winning news look easy.
The cameramen never miss a single news segment even in the midst of other activities going on around them. The cameras move from one set to another…..eventually on to the weather report. And then, all of a sudden the cameras are on the TV News Anchor, Mayra Moreno, of the Morning News. I was in awe! She interacts with her viewing audience as though they were sitting right there in front of her and then a commercial break. She walks over to us, celebrity image expert Starley Murray and me, the self-esteem expert.
Starley gives her a quick rundown of what our segment is about….self-image is the topic of the day. It is the day of the News Anchor Emmy Awards so all focus is on the importance of appearance. Starley is a pro. I am introduced to News Anchor Mayra Moreno.
She is friendly, has great grace and poise… it is obvious that she is at home on the set. And then, we’re on! Stay tuned to the next post and find out what happens next!
